Gambit is a 2012 film directed by Michael Hoffman, starring Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz, Alan Rickman and Stanley Tucci. It is a remake of the 1966 film of the same name starring Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine. This version is scripted by Joel and Ethan Coen. It was set to be released in the United States on 12 October 2012 but the date has now been set for an undetermined 2013 release. The film was released in Great Britain on 21 November 2012.
A remake of Gambit had been mooted for several years. Producer Mike Lobell saw the original film at its London premiere in 1966,
and in 1997,
Lobell, who was then working at Universal, was looking for a film to remake; he suggested Gambit and Universal approved it. He initially sent the original script to Aaron Sorkin to rewrite it; however, despite being keen to work on the project, the success of Sports Night and more especially The West Wing meant that he couldn't commit to completing the rewrite. After Sorkin pulled out, Lobell met British producer Andy Paterson, director Anand Tucker and writer Frank Cottrell Boyce.
Boyce produced a script moving the story to Japan; despite this Lobell didn't think it was funny enough and decided to move on. Hearing that Joel and Ethan Coen were looking for some rewrite work between films,
Lobell gave them the script and they produced a "radical overhaul", moving the story to the United States. Despite having the Coen brothers on board the project remained in development hell. Initially, Alexander Payne was keen to work on it, reuniting with Election star Reese Witherspoon, but was reluctant to work on a script he didn't write.
Witherspoon was keen to remain on the project but only if producer Lobell could get Mike Nichols or Robert Altman to direct.
After the success of Gosford Park, Altman was keen to make another film in Britain, especially as Witherspoon was attached. However,
prior to signing on, Altman backed out, feeling that the material was not suitable for him. Nichols wasn't interested and the project stalled.
Bo Welch was then attached to the project with Colin Firth starring as Harry Deane, with Jennifer Aniston and Ben Kingsley attached. After the box office failure of Welch's 2003 live action film of Dr Seuss's The Cat in the Hat Universal got cold feet and the project was again put into turnaround.[Outside of the studio system Lobell moved between different financiers in a bid to get the project moving. One group,
Alcon Entertainment, had Gerard Butler lined up as Harry Deane, with Richard LaGravenese directing LaGravenese wanted a script polish, which took a long time, removing a lot of the work the Coen Brothers had done. Again the project was stalled.

Speaking in September 2008, Colin Firth was asked about whether he would take the role of Harry Deane, and said, "No! It's a complete lie. It's been on IMDb and just sitting there." He also said: "The Coen brothers have written an absolutely brilliant script." Others reportedly discussed for the remake included Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock.
The script was well known around Hollywood and in 2009 Lobell took a call from Roeg Sutherland at CAA Sutherland knew of a fledgling production company, Crime Scene Pictures, with equity financing from Southeast Asia,
who were looking for a marquee project for their new company and were keen to get Gambit made. In 2010, Doug Liman was reportedly considering directing the film.Although initially reluctant to take the project, Lobell persuaded Michael Hoffman to helm the film, and filming finally began in London in May 2011.

In February 2011, John Underwood of bestforfilm.com reported that Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz were set to star as art curator Harry Deane and steer roper PJ Puznowski, who conspire to sell a fake work of art to a collector. On May 15, 2011, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Stanley Tucci and Cloris Leachman had joined a cast that also included Alan Rickman and Tom Courtenay. The music is by Rolfe Kent, whose previous films include Up in the Air, Legally Blonde and Sideways.

The Art Gallery at Compton Verney House in South Warwickshire was used for filming some scenes during July

Plot,"I've had a storyline in mind from the start - there are even scenes in Avatar that I kept in because they lead to the sequel," Cameron said. "It just makes sense to think of it as a two or three film arc, in terms of the business plan. The CG plants and trees and creatures and the musculo-skeletal rigging of the main characters - that all takes an enormous amount of time to create. It'd be a waste not to use it again."

Cameron has said in a statement to THR: "In the second and third films, which will be self contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of Avatar's visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world. I'm looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild."

Cameron has also hinted that the heroes will venture to some of Polyphemus's other moons in the film. He also confirmed that Avatar 2 will explore the Na'vi culture more than Avatar.

On April 20, 2010 Cameron confirmed that Avatar 2 will explore the oceans of Pandora. He also confirmed that Avatar 2 will contain more volcanoes, when prompted by an interviewer. Three days later, it was confirmed that Avatar 2 will take place several years after the events of the original film.

James Cameron also stated that the style would be influenced by the master navigator culture of the small pacific civilizations of Micronesia. He was exposed to these cultures during his time on these islands during preparation for his dive in the Marianas Trench.
ProductionEdit

Before the original film was released, James Cameron talked about turning Avatar into a trilogy of films that would follow for sure Neytiri and later after the film's release Jake Sully as well. Not long after,

James Cameron announced that he is in the process of working on the film. The director also went on to say that the film will most likely not be called "Avatar 2", since Jake is no longer an avatar at the end of the first movie, but rather a Na'vi.
He claims that he plans to once again do the impossible by having a much shorter production time, and for the sequel to be much cheaper than the original. Avatar 2 may be shot in a higher frame rate than the original, which is shot at 24 fps. The sequel may be shot at 48 fps, 60 fps or an even higher frame rate.

James Cameron also confirmed that the sequels would be filmed back-to-back: “I am in the process of writing the next two ‘Avatar’ films now. We are planning to shoot them together and [edit them in post-production] together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart.”

Sigourney Weaver, who recently also dropped hints about a return for her character after a tragic death in the first film, stated that Cameron will begin filming on the second Avatar film next year, and will film the second and third films back-to-back.

Zoe Saldana (Neytiri) confirmed that Cameron is currently in the process of finishing the film's script, stating: "Last I heard, I spoke with his wife, Suzy [Amis], and she told me that he was definitely very reserved right now and taking his time. She barely sees him. He’s just locked up writing, finishing up the script. I know that it’s just a matter of time."

Principal photography for Avatar began in April 2007 in Los Angeles and Wellington, New Zealand. Cameron described the film as a hybrid with a full live-action shoot in combination with computer-generated characters and live environments. "Ideally at the end of the day the audience has no idea which they're looking at," Cameron said.
The director indicated that he had already worked four months on nonprincipal scenes for the film. The live action was shot with a modified version of the proprietary digital 3-D Fusion Camera System, developed by Cameron and Vince Pace.[ In January 2007, Fox had announced that 3-D filming for Avatar would be done at 24 frames per second despite Cameron's strong opinion that a 3-D film requires higher frame rate to make strobing less noticeable.[ According to Cameron, the film is composed of 60% computer-generated elements and 40% live action, as well as traditional miniatures.
Motion-capture photography lasted 31 days at the Hughes Aircraft stage in Playa Vista in Los Angeles.[ Live action photography began in October 2007 at Stone Street Studios in Wellington, New Zealand, and was scheduled to last 31 days More than a thousand people worked on the production. In preparation of the filming sequences,
all of the actors underwent professional training specific to their characters such as archery, horseback riding, firearm use, and hand-to-hand combat. They received language and dialect training in the Na'vi language created for the film. Before shooting the film, Cameron also sent the cast to the Hawaiian tropical rainforests to get a feel for a rainforest setting before shooting on the soundstage.
Innovations include a new system for lighting massive areas like Pandora's junglea motion-capture stage or "volume" six times larger than any previously used, and an improved method of capturing facial expressions, enabling full performance capture. To achieve the face capturing, actors wore individually made skull caps fitted with a tiny camera positioned in front of the actors' faces; the information collected about their facial expressions and eyes is then transmitted to computers

According to Cameron, the method allows the filmmakers to transfer 100% of the actors' physical performances to their digital counterparts.Besides the performance capture data which were transferred directly to the computers, numerous reference cameras gave the digital artists multiple angles of each performanc A technically challenging scene was near the end of the film when the computer-generated Neytiri held the live action Jake in human form, and attention was given to the details of the shadows and reflected light between them
