TORONTO – Imax is to release Yash Raj Films’ Paani and additional movie titles as it expands its pact with the Indian film studio giant.

Imax's International Expansion at Tipping Point
The Toronto-based large format exhibitor will release the Yash Raj Films titles in its theaters across India and in other key markets.
The Imax-Yash Raj Films agreement, unveiled at the 2013 FICCI Frames conference in Mumbai, now covers three films, including the upcoming Hindi language action thriller DHOOM:3.
The move comes as Imax looks to expand its Bollywood film slate as it builds out its network in India.
“Since announcing the Imax release of DHOOM: 3, we've seen tremendous anticipation building among Indian moviegoers around this first-ever Imax release of a Hindi feature film, and we're excited to add to this excitement with two more of our highly anticipated films, including our most ambitious one, Paani," said Yash Raj Films chairman Aditya Chopra in a statement.
"As we continue to grow our network across India, we are committed to offering the nation's growing Imax fan base an elevated movie-going experience that transports them into Bollywood's best,” Greg Foster, chairman and president of Imax Entertainment, added in his own statement.
Actor Hrithik Roshan, who has reportedly been approached to play the lead in Shekhar Kapur's ambitious film "Paani", says it has been his dream to be directed by the filmmaker.
Asked if he has signed on the dotted line, Hrithik said: "I would just say that working with Shekhar Kapur is a lifelong dream of mine. 'Paani' is a dream and I hope it happens

As Hrithik Roshan has backed out of the Mr India director’s most challenging project, we wonder if Kapur’s film will go on floors this year
Shekhar Kapur is in a fix. After roping in Hrithik Roshan, the filmmaker was quite excited to start the pre-production work on his magnum opus Paani, but his ambition plan hit the roadblock when the lead actor conveniently made an exit from the project (for reasons best known to him). Reports suggest that the honey-eyed actor’s dates clashed with Karan Johar’s Shuddhi which is scheduled to go on floors this year.
Fortunately, Shekhar breathed a sigh of relief as Aditya Chopra and Yash Raj Films stepped in to produce his movie, but still there has been no real progress considering the filmmaker has not yet finalised his film’s hero. The Elizabeth director is quite amused with constant speculative reports on Paani. He said on Twitter, “Paani. Never made a film where media is so obsessed with its cast. Even Heath Ledger n Cate Blanchet were newcomers when I cast them,” and added, “Paani is my next film. It’s so huge complex n important that I don’t have energy for anything else. No matter what the media speculates.”
Considering YRF’s strong backing, we really hope Paani will finally be made and Shekhar will certainly get done with his dream project which he had announced almost seven years ago. Good luck, Shekhar Kapur!

The film that was first announced with Vivek Oberoi in the lead essays a time when the world has gone to war over the scarcity of drinking water. International corporations hold water as leverage to control the human population. The film tells the story of a financially poor man, who stealthily visits the elite parts of the city where he comes across a beautiful woman and they fall in loveLast week, Digital Spy reported, “Yash Raj Films recently confirmed it will be releasing Shekhar Kapur’s Paani in IMAX cinemas across India.”
Paani is the Hindi word for water.
Another article in Digital Spy has noted, “Paani is set in a future world ravaged by water shortages. Two young lovers trigger a war that will break the iron grip of the conglomerates and return water to the people. It has been widely reported that Hrithik Roshan is being considered for the lead role.”
In May 2010, Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow spoke alongside Kapur at a media conference for the film at the Cannes Film Festival in France. That June, the Ottawa Citizen reported, “Kapur calls it his ‘passion project’ and credits Barlow’s book Blue Covenant for giving him a major piece
of inspiration. …Kapur found Barlow after meeting documentary maker Irena Salina and seeing her film Flow.” Kapur said, “I have been wanting to make this movie for a long time. Irena said ‘you have to read Maude’s book’. Blue Covenant was the spark that coalesced the idea.”
In March 2011, Kapur completed the script for the film.
In December 2012, it was confirmed that Kapur had found a producer for the film, Aditya Chopra at Yash Raj Films.
IMDb now lists 2015 as the release date for Paani.

UPDATE: Maude Barlow speaks at Cannes
The film, patterned on the lines of Robert Wise's West Side Story, will finally go on the floors this summer. It is expected to have loads of music and songs.
When asked about the cast Shekhar doesn't deny his partiality towards newcomers.
Says the director, "Whether it is here in Mumbai or in the West, I usually work with new people. The cast factor has never stopped from making my films the way I want to. Let's see. I first need to be psychologically ready to shoot."
We hear the landscape for Shekhar's futuristic Mumbai may be built outside idea, probably in Spain. At the moment Shekhar is not saying anything about the location.
But in an earlier interview to this writer he had said, "I'd shoot Paani anywhere where I'd get the intellectual and geographical space to build my city of a water-challenged future. At the moment, we're exploring the modalities and the feasibility of the venue for shooting."
Shekhar is amused by news reports that Danny Boyle is producing Paani. "Where do these stories come from? Nothing has been confirmed with Danny as yet."
Shekhar's next immediate assignment is likely to be a music video for his daughter Kaveri.
"It's entirely up to her when she wants to shoot it. I am completely at her disposal," says the doting father.
